Best Day of the Week to Fly

Data from 44 million flights shows Tuesday and Wednesday have the fewest delays. Here's the complete breakdown.

The short answer: fly Tuesday or Wednesday

Based on our analysis of 44 million US flights (2019-2025), Tuesday consistently has the highest on-time rate at around 81%, followed closely by Wednesday at 80%. Friday is the worst at 76%.

That 5% gap translates to real-world impact: on a Tuesday, roughly 1 in 5 flights is delayed. On a Friday, it's closer to 1 in 4.

Day-by-day breakdown

  • Monday (78%) — Decent. Business rush fills morning flights, but afternoon is calm.
  • Tuesday (81%) — Best day. Lowest passenger volumes. Airlines catch up on maintenance from the weekend.
  • Wednesday (80%) — Almost as good as Tuesday. A great day for leisure travel.
  • Thursday (79%) — Average. Weekend travelers start flying out, especially in the evening.
  • Friday (76%) — Worst day. High demand + cascading delays from the week + weather that's had 5 days to build up.
  • Saturday (79%) — Better than Friday. Morning flights are reliable. Afternoon gets busy.
  • Sunday (77%) — Below average. Everyone returns home. Afternoon/evening is worst.
💡 The flexibility bonus
If you can shift your travel by even one day — flying out Tuesday instead of Monday, or returning Wednesday instead of Sunday — you'll statistically face fewer delays.
